There are two sorts of teacher: those who talk and those who listen. Most of the time I prefer not to talk, but to listen while my pupils speak, watch while they perform. While many see education as a race, for me it's a journey. You might like to take the motorway and reach your destination as quickly as possible. You might prefer to take the scenic route. To stop from time to time to admire the view. To take the occasional detour and visit a totally different place. You might start slowly and speed up later, or start quickly and then slow down. None of this matters very much as long as you reach your destination. Most teachers, it seems to me, start with their own perception of what the child should be. I, on the other hand, start with the child himself. Once you understand the concept of neurodiversity, along with multiple intelligences and different learning styles, you understand that each child's mind works in a different way. Rather than confronting the child and insisting that we do things my way I take the child's side, work out how he likes to do things. Only then can we decide together on our destination and plan the journey we will take together. I treat each pupil with kindness and gentleness. I am non-punitive, non-confrontational and non-judgemental. I try not to label a child, or compare one child with another. As far as possible I try not to raise my voice or use any form of aggression. My only weapon is humour. If I sound like the right teacher for your child please feel free to contact me. |
